The consequences of having a low or poor credit score will mean having a hard time buying a home, leasing an apartment or financing a car. Even if your credit score is fine, but could use some improving, you will probably have to deal with higher interest rates. A Higher credit score means that your interest rates will be lower and being approved for home ownership will be easier. Read on to find out just how you can improve your credit rating.

Your first step to repairing your credit score is to find out what your score is in the first place. These three digits are the basis for your borrowing power. When you know what your score is, you can move from there.

Pay down your credit card debt. Although paying down your mortgage or car loans is healthy for your credit score, you will have a better chance at dramatically improving your score by lowering your debt to 30% of your overall available credit. The credit bureaus like to see that you are not maxing out your cards, but have a healthy balance on your accounts, and are using your credit smartly.

Be conservative in how and when you use your credit cards. If you are using your credit cards to do all your shopping with, and paying it off at the end of the month, although this may be wise it will hurt your credit score. It may sound strange but the way credit scores are calculated depend on the revolving balance, and do not take in how much you pay on your debt every month into consideration.

Make sure your credit limit is accurate with the credit bureaus. If you receive a credit increase make sure your lender reports this increase. If you are using your card extensively and your increase in not reported it may seem like you are maxing out your credit card every month.

Use your older credit cards. If you have credit cards that you no longer use, having an open but inactive account may actually hurt your credit. Keep your accounts active by using your older credit cards every once in a while and pay off the amount you charge to the account. This will help keep the account active and healthy.

Ask for a goodwill gesture from your lender. Most people will mail in a late payment, but are typically a good customer. If you normally make your payments on time but made one late payment, ask your lender to delete this from your record. This will not only clean up your history with the company, but will also help your overall credit.

Dispute any old collections. If you had a falling out with the phone company a few years ago, which eventually ended up in collections, dispute this with the credit bureau. You can claim the collection as not yours. The smaller the disputed amount is for, the less likely the bureau will verify. This will result in the disputed charge being erased from your record. Getting a higher credit score will take some work on your part, if you are persistent and diligent getting a better score can help get you lower interest rates on your purchases.

Do you have annoying low credit scores that are making it more difficult for you to purchase a new house or vehicle? To have the lowest interest rates possible, you need to have better than the average credit score. Learn how to accomplish this right now!

UPDATE: This is the same debt snowball technique my family and I used to pay off over $90,000 of consumer debt in less than two years!

The Debt Snowball is a popular debt reduction technique recommended by many financial gurus in the industry. I first learned about it by reading the book The Total Money Makeover by author Dave Ramsey. If you are serious about taking control of your debt, instead of letting it control you, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to pay it all off.

Update: Be sure to check out my new FREE debt snowball spreadsheet calculator to help you keep track of your progress as you work your way through the debt snowball process!

Gather your account statements for all your outstanding DEBT and be sure that you include your significant other’s DEBT (if applicable). It will be hard to proceed any further without knowing where you actually stand. Get a copy of your Free Annual Credit Report and verify that the credit bureaus don’t show you responsible for any other accounts you may have forgotten about.

List out your different loans, credit cards, medical bills, and other debts down the side of a piece of scrap paper, or even better a computer spreadsheet. Make sure you include the remaining balance and interest rate of each debt next to its name. The sight of all your debts together isn’t easy on the eyes but it can be a great motivator to push you in to paying it down.

You may have a couple of small debts under a $1000 from medical bills, department stores, or other places. Focus all of your extra income on these small accounts first. Pay the minimums on the rest of your loans and get these guys out of the way so you can focus on the big ones. Once you’ve knocked off your last “small” account take that payment and start attacking the big debts. Mathematically, it is best to pay down your remaining debts by order of the highest interest rates. This decision is yours. I preferred to attack my debts smallest to largest regardless of the rate based on the advice of Ramsey. He states that the emotional boost you get from knocking out a few quick loans will help keep you motivated throughout the entire process. When you knock out a debt apply that payment to the next debt up your list and keep repeating this process until you are done. Financial planners refer to this technique as the Debt Snowball because as you pay off a debt, that payment then rolls into the payment on the next debt in your plan continuing to grow like a snow ball would! Remember focus is the key here.

In the recent economy there are many people who have suffered credit problems. Everyone wants to have perfect credit but at times we all have unexpected circumstances. Credit difficulties are bothersome for individuals because it can be complicated if not impossible to get credit, if you do manage to acquire credit you can be charged a higher interest rate or you may have to put down more security than usual.

There are some steps you can take though, that can start you on the way to excellent credit. The first thing you need to do is to obtain a credit report from all of the big three credit reporting bureaus, which are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion in the United States. You can get one credit report each year for free from each one or you can purchase a tri-merged credit report that has all three credit reports in one.

When you have your credit report, you need to examine it from top to bottom for accuracy. It is very unusual that a credit report is completely accurate as it is projected that as many as 79% of all credit reports include mistaken information. You have the right to dispute anything that you believe may be an error or anything that might not be absolutely accurate.

The credit reporting agencies are not concerned with the accuracy of their information. The fact is they make their money by selling the information, it does not matter to them if it is true or not. If there are errors on your report you are the only one who suffers so it is your responsibility to make sure that your credit report is accurate and correct.

Back in the seventy’s the Fair Credit Reporting Act was enacted to protect consumers. This law gives you the right to dispute anything that you deem to be mistaken or inaccurate on your credit report. You must submit a formal written dispute to the credit agencies and after they receive the dispute they have between 30 and 45 days to either bear out the accuracy of their listings or remove it from your report.

Since the credit agencies do not make money by dealing with disputes a consumer actually has an advantage when it comes to disputing credit listings. If you put forth a good case you have a great chance of getting the information removed.

When you are disputing the inaccurate listings it is also wise to start rebuilding some good credit. Make all payments on time and try to pay down the balances on any debts that you owe. A large percentage of your credit score is actually how much credit you have obtainable compared to how much credit you have used. If you want a high credit score you need to have access to credit but not be utilizing it.

Rebuilding and repairing your credit is something that can be accomplished you just need to take a few steps to get started. Make sure that your financial situation like your current job and income are solid and then take the actions to repair your credit and your financial life will soon be back in order.

Your credit rating is one of your most valuable resource. To learn more in relation to credit repair websites, or even about credit repair companies visit my blog.

Debt collectors, or bill and account collectors’ job is to try to collect payment on bills that are overdue. Most bill collectors are employed by third party collection agencies. The creditor, or the company or business that is owed the debt, will often hire outside of the company; especially if their accounts receivable department is small.

Other collectors work straight for the original creditors; these people are called in house collectors. Typically these are finance-based companies like credit card and mortgage companies, health care providers or utility companies.

No matter what organization that they employed by, the goals of bill collectors are the same. First, they’re called upon to locate businesses or people that are in debt, and let them know that they are late. Typically this will be over the phone, but sometimes they mail out letters.

When debtors (people in debt) move without leaving a forwarding address, bill collectors might check with telephone companies, the post office, credit bureaus and former neighbors to get the new address. This practice is called “skip tracing.” They will utilize computer systems to automatically track when companies or people change their contact information or addresses on any of their open accounts.

Once the collection agents find the people that owe them money they let them know about the overdue accounts and ask for payment. If it’s necessary they’ll go over the terms of sale, or credit contracts. A good bill collector is a sneaky one. They’ll probably use their listening skills to try to figure out the cause of the delinquency.

Typically, they will have the power to offer a repayment plan or some other help to make it easier for people to pay off their debt. At times they are able to find solutions to the financial problem. They might even offer useful advice or refer debtors to debt counselors.

Mallory Megan is employed by a debt collection agency. She also writes articles on business and finance, consumer spending and collection agencies. This and other unique content ‘bad debt collection solution’ articles are available with free reprint rights.

There is a myriad of information about credit repair out there right now. Many individuals are beset by problematic credit due to the economy and because of the increased demand for credit repair there are plenty of fallacies out there. While credit repair is usually not a quick fix but it can work.

It is just a plain fact that almost all of credit reports include errors. It is inescapable that the error rate on credit reports would be high just for the sheer fact that the credit bureaus put together substantial amounts of information on millions of people everyday. There are obvious errors on credit reports but there’s also many errors of omission or inclusions that if repaired could show the consumer in a better light by improving their credit reports and raising their scores.

Since the error rate on credit reports were so widespread, back in 1970, Congress enacted the Federal Credit Reporting Act or the FCRA. This gave consumers the right to dispute inaccurate or erroneous information that showed on their credit reports and prevented them from getting credit.

Yet still the myth continues that credit repair is a con and it does not work. This is not true. Many folks have benefited from various forms of credit repair which is very possible to get negative, inaccurate information removed from your credit report. While of course, there are no guarantees and your credit report may still be far from perfect, you can make use of some credit repair techniques to make significant improvements from your present circumstances.

The FCRA gives consumers the right to dispute the data on their credit report. The credit bureaus then have 30 days from delivery of the dispute in order to verify the information. If the information cannot be verified then it must be erased from the report. Many people have been able to get negative information deleted by making the effort to dispute the information.

When you are checking out your credit report, you need to also be familiar with any exclusions, or positive things that should be incorporated but are not, and also inclusions or things that are included that don’t actually have to be. Ensure that your available credit balances are listing because this influences your debt to available credit ratio, which is an extremely important factor in determining your credit rating. Also make sure to check for old and obsolete information that may still be listed, as information should only stay on your report for 7 years from the date of first delinquency.

Other steps you can implement to improve your credit include using your older credit cards more often than new ones because length of credit history is important and paying down balances in order to improve the debt to available credit ratio. Both of these factors are crucial for your ultimate credit score.

Credit repair is quite possible. There are many things that can be done that can boost your scores. You can do it all yourself or you can employ a professional to advise and help you but it’s not necessary to believe any of the misconceptions that say it cannot be done because it can.

It’s highly unlikely that you will not have a credit problem or two in your lifetime. For more information on repair my credit visit us at our blog!

It starts with a letter. Then another, more aggressive letter. Then come the phone calls, and even threats of an unsavory report to credit bureaus. There could even be a potential lawsuit.

To retrieve debt creditors hire collection agencies. These third party companys generally work on commission which fuels their vigorous attempts to retrieve money.

Collection agencies can actually report your debt to credit bureaus. Unfortunately settling the debt will not result in it being removed from your credit reports, it will only be checked off as “paid.” They also can ask for a debtors credit report to size up the person’s financial situation, or to get an updated phone number and address. And, although collection agencies do not like to send many accounts back, sometimes they will refer their account back to the creditor in order to recommend filing a law suit.

There are codes and procedures by which collection agencies must abide. Letters should appear in ambiguous envelops that do not reveal the intent of the letter. With phone calls, a collector can’t disclose the reason for the call. One example would be if a collector reaches an answering machine. they cannot explain why they are calling, all they can do is leave their name and a number where they can be contacted.

Although collection agencies are permitted to contact a debtor’s place of employment, they absolutely cannot get a debtor fired from their job. They are not able to make any kind of information concerning the debt public, although they can communicate openly with credit bureaus. Despite the fact that many people believe that a collection agency could legally seize a debtor’s bank account, paycheck and assets, the company cannot unless their has been a successful law suit ordering them to do so. Under no circumstances can a collection agency threaten a debtor with violence.

Even though some collections companies attempt to practice illegal strategies to get money, there are also a large number of reputable ones. With financial issues like debt, it is always crucial that you know your rights.

Do you want to own your first house? How about upgrade or move to a bigger one? Nedbank understands these needs and realizes the importance of a home loan. After all, it is one of the biggest investments you will ever make.

Buyers want flexibility. Nedbank is dedicated to providing flexible home loans to their customers. Nedbank can tailor home loans individually to meet their clients. Whether this is your first home or your third, Nedbank is there for you.

Nedbank home loans can be used to buy either an existing home or vacant land. Home loans for 100% of the purchase price are available as well, depending on the property value and buyer?s credit history. Nedbank will also finance between 70-100% of a vacant land purchase, which once again depends on the value of the property and the buyer?s credit history.

Nedbank offers both fixed and variable interest rate home loans, as well as Nedbank Accelerated Payments, which enable the buyer to pay off their home loan faster than what is agreed upon in the home loan contract. Talk about flexibility!

In order to qualify for a Nedbank home loan, you must be a South African resident with a good credit record. There are minimum monthly income requirements as well. Before you apply for a home loan, check your credit report. If there are any errors, contact the credit bureaus to have them removed.

If high credit balances are lowering your score, pay down your balances before you apply. The higher your credit score, the better home loan terms will be offered to you. You also want to make sure you have two or three months? worth of mortgage payments in the bank. These are called reserves.

Paperwork comes with anything important, so you can imagine the amount of documents you will need for a home loan. Ask the bank ahead of time and submit the paperwork at the start of the loan process. Documentation includes proof of identity, income verification, bank statements and the offer to purchase agreement.

Once you get a home loan, you will have to make monthly installment payments on the loan. The monthly payment consists of capital, interest, home insurance premiums, an administrative fee and possibly a life insurance premium.

When you are ready to purchase a home, make sure you see a qualified lender. They can review your situation, answer any questions you might have and develop a home loan proposal to meet your specific needs, while putting you on the path to a new home.

Tom Martens is the content coordinator for South Arica?s leading Homeloans portal which amongst others offers Bond origination services for all major banks.

Bankruptcy and Your Credit Report

If bankruptcy is unavoidable, you can file either a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, also known as a “liquidation bankruptcy,” or a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, also known as a “reorganization bankruptcy.” Chapter 7 will allow you to discharge your debt, while Chapter 13 provides a way to repay your debts using a negotiated repayment plan.

How Does Bankruptcy Affect Your Credit History?

Filing for bankruptcy will stop creditors from trying to collect the debts you owe, but WILL NOT give you a clean financial slate. Bankruptcy will seriously affect your credit report and credit worthiness. Consequently, obtaining a loan or line of credit in the future will be extremely difficult.

When you file bankruptcy, your credit score will plunge by hundreds of points. This same bankruptcy will remain on your credit report for 10 years, unless you try to remove it. One option to consider is rebuilding your credit score. This, however, is difficult at best when no one is interested in offering credit to you.

A person who has filed bankruptcy will be considered a potential financial liability by any company that issues credit. Because of this, repairing your credit score is one strategy to consider.

Instead of waiting 10 years for the bankruptcy to clear from your credit report, you can take definitive action. Credit repair allows you to rebuild your credit score more quickly, become eligible for new loans in less time, and become credit worthy faster.

Can I Rebuild My Credit Legally?

It IS legal to contest inaccurate information contained on your credit report. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows you to contest any information which, in your opinion, is inaccurate.

Creditors and credit bureaus are required by law to investigate and verify this information. If negative information cannot be verified, it must be permanently deleted.

If this sounds like a solution you are interested in, you could benefit from expert advice and assistance. The legal professionals at Lexington Law have the tools and experience to help you. Consider Lexington Law when it comes to deleting negative entries from your credit report.

Last week I received an email from a reader sharing her success removing late payments from her credit reports using my sample “Goodwill Letter”. Today I am republishing her message with the hopes it will inspire other readers.

I wanted to send you a note thanking you for your help and your information posted on your blog.

I am trying to repair my credit in anticipation of qualifying for a home loan purchase and had gone thru a rough patch when I had some late pays (30, 60, 90’s) on a few credit cards.

My husband had just finished grad school and was unemployed, I was out on maternity leave and then we moved 700 miles to be back home after my husbands graduation to be closer to family and for a prospective job for him.

Anyway, these late payments had really hurt my credit – and I could see now way around them. One day (luckily for me)I came across your blog and the sample letter you provided to request “a goodwill credit repair.”

I copied it, rewrote some of it & then sent it off – really without much hope, but thinking “why not?” in requesting to get these late payments removed from my credit reports. And guess what?! The letters WORKED!

It didn’t get all of my late pays removed, some credit card companies denied my request right away, but in other cases, primarily Capital One – I’d say 50% of the requests were approved!

Your sample letter got them removed and cleared off my credit bureaus! THANK YOU so much for providing that letter – it helped me take back some control of my credit and made me feel so much confident in being an active participant in how my creditors VIEW and TREAT ME. Thanks again & keep up the good work!
